Responsible media use: permission, privacy and copyright

A file being technically accessible does not automatically grant permission to copy, republish or monetize it. Use media tools only with content you own or are authorized to use.

Public access is not the same as an open license

A public webpage can still contain copyrighted video, photography, music or writing. Copyright normally belongs to the creator unless rights were transferred or a license grants specific uses. Saving a personal copy, editing a clip, publishing it and using it commercially can involve different rights.

Check the source's terms, the creator's stated license and local law. If permission is unclear, ask the rights holder. Attribution is useful but does not replace permission when permission is required.

Examples of appropriate use

  • Downloading your own uploaded media as a backup.
  • Processing a client's files under an agreement that allows it.
  • Saving public-domain material from a reliable source.
  • Using Creative Commons material within its license conditions.
  • Converting a local file you legally possess for compatibility or accessibility.

Educational, commentary and quotation exceptions vary by country and context. They are not a blanket right to copy complete works. When the intended use matters commercially or legally, obtain qualified advice.

Private and protected content

Do not attempt to bypass passwords, private-account controls, paywalls, digital rights management or technical restrictions. Never request another person's session cookies, account credentials or authentication codes. A legitimate tool should not promise access to content that the user is not authorized to view.

StoryDrop accepts supported public links and local files. Availability depends on the source and can change. The service does not guarantee that every public page is downloadable and does not bypass DRM or access controls.

Privacy and safe handling

Media can reveal faces, voices, locations, documents and private conversations. Review a file before sharing it and remove unnecessary metadata when appropriate. Avoid uploading confidential work to any online processor unless you understand its privacy practices and have authority to do so.

Use clear filenames, protect backups and delete temporary copies after the task is complete. Report private data exposure through the support page. Read the StoryDrop privacy policy and terms before using the service.
